Helmet for the Mind

“But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.” 1 Thessalonians 5:8 NKJV.

Hope is the helmet that protects our minds.

Tears streamed down my face as I drove down Highway 35W toward my work. Feeling worthless. Afraid that I have nothing to offer. Afraid that all that is, is all that there will ever be for me. Mounting evidence of all the reasons why I suck, stacked against me in my brain like folders of evidence used to sentence me to a life of hopelessness and worthlessness. All I could do was pray.

“I can’t do this anymore, Lord!”

Tired of feeling as if I have no value and as if there is no purpose to my life. And just as quick as I sent up that prayer, the picture of all the folders of evidence stacked against me being wiped away came to mind. Jesus cleans the slate. He removes all the evidence stacked against me. Hope. In that moment, God gave me hope. The salvation of hope.

Hope is a helmet of protection for the mind. It protects us from dark thoughts, hopelessness, depression, doubt, and fear. Hope protects us from all the piling evidence stacked against us. When the odds are not on our side, there is hope. Not just any hope, the hope of salvation. Salvation in the God, who…

Parts the seas and makes ways where there are no ways.

Sets the prisoners free.

Raises people from the dead.

Makes all things new.

Breathes new life into our lives.

Our hope is in the God who heals, restores, and wipes away every piece of evidence that is set against us. He is the God who makes the impossible things possible! He is the God who has plans and directs our steps. He is the God who gives us gifts and a calling that are irrevocable. He is the God who is the author and finisher of our stories. He is the God of our eternal heavenly promise. He is the God who can use all things for our good and His glory. He is the God who loves us so much that He commands us not to be afraid!

Fear is the expectation that bad and evil things are going to happen. Hope is the expectation that something good is going to happen.

What evidence is stacked against you? What doubts and fears are attacking your mind? What fearful and evil things have you been expecting to happen?

In Joshua 1:9, God commands us to not be afraid! Have hope. God can remove all the evidence that is stacked against you and I. Expect that the God who can do anything will do the impossible. That kind of hope, the hope in the salvation that God offers to us through Jesus Christ is the kind that protects our minds from hopelessness, faithlessness, and fear. That kind of hope gives us perseverance to continue down the hard path. To continue making the hard choices. To continue on a journey that seems like it is going no where, or give us the courage to make changes when they are needed.

Hope is the helmet that protects our minds! Put on the knowledge that our God breathes new life into our lives. What do you need to keep persevering in? What do you need to make changes in? Whatever you do, do it with the saving hope that all things really are possible with God!
